Bangalore, Sep 8: The 19th Livestock Census to collect information about types of livestock, poultry and number of equipments used in the animal husbandry sector in both rural and urban areas will be conducted in the state from September 15 to October 15.
As many as 1200 enumerators will be involved in the exercise, who will be visiting houses, enterprises and institutions in both rural and urban areas, as a part of the all India Livestock Census 2012.
The census, being conducted once in five years, is fully funded by the centre. A sum of Rs 10 cr has been released for the purpose.The census data would be used for framing government policies and distribution of various benefits to farmers.
Adoni Syed Saleem, state commissioner of the animal husbandry and veterinary services department, who briefed reporters on the highlights of the census operations, said detailed information related to cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, ponies, donkeys, dogs, rabbits, and elephants would be collected. In the category of poultry, information of fowls, quails, ducks, turkeys and emu would be collected, he said.
In addition, information would also be collected regarding number of equipments used in husbandry sector such as milking machine, mechanized fodder cutter, mechanized chopper and baler, mechanized dung collection equipment.
On an average, one enumerator would be appointed for every 2000 households in urban areas and 1500 household in plain areas and 1000 households in difficult and hilly areas. One supervisor would monitor the work of six enumerators, the commissioner said.
About 1.35 lac households/enterprises/institutions would be covered in the state during the month-long exercise. The data would be made public in November end, he said.
As per the 2007 Census, there were 3.28 cr livestock and 4.24 cr poultry in Karnataka.
The number of cattle, buffaloes and dogs (domestic) stood at 105.07 lac, 43.29 lac, and 19.97 lac, respectively. The first census was conducted in 1897 by Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the then by the Maharaja of Mysore.
