Turkmenistan Grants Amnesty to 1,300 Prisoners

Moscow, Aug 13 (IANS/RIA Novosti): Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov has granted amnesty to more than 1,300 inmates during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

This year "Laylat al Qadr", also known as the "Night of Power" or the "Night of Destiny", will be celebrated in the night of Aug 14-15.

It is the anniversary of the night Muslims believe the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Mohammad.

The presidential decree granted amnesty to 1,327 Turkmen nationals and 44 foreigners.

Former President Saparmurat Niyazov first established the tradition of mass release to mark important holidays in the country.
