Udupi, Jul 27: The hinterland fishermen community and people living on the banks of Suvarna River, on Thursday July 26, urged deputy commissioner (DC) Dr Reju to withdraw the temporary permits that were issued by the district administration to sand miners.
They alleged that rampant sand mining from Kadavinabagilu–Kallianpur to Nayampalli–Kallianpur, near here, despite the monsoon has posed hardships to the fishermen with dwindling fish catches and shell fish that were abundant till a few years ago. The people living along the banks of the river are worried over the imminent threat to their houses owing to reckless sand mining.
They urged the district administration to withdraw the temporary permits that were issued to sand miners who exploit the labourers from other states by using unconventional means to collect sand from the riverbed by diving.
The fishermen people living on the banks of Suvarna river, led by Dinesh Kundar Kallianpur and Arun Kundar presented a memorandum to the DC in this regard.
