Mangaluru, Jan 8: A 90-year-old woman successfully underwent open heart surgery at Srinivasa Medical College Hospital, Mukka, marking a rare medical achievement. Radha, a resident of Manjeshwar, was admitted to the hospital for heart disease. Tests revealed a tumor measuring six centimeters by five centimeters on the left side of her heart, obstructing the mitral valve and causing severe breathing difficulties and irregular heart rates.
Unable to walk, sit, or sleep, Radha required immediate intervention. Echocardiography showed the tumor affecting the left ventricle and mitral valve function. Cardiac surgeon Dr Amit Kiran performed the open heart surgery, assisted by anesthetist Dr Balakrishna Bhatt, assistant surgeon Dr Harish Shetty, and Dr Siddharth S and Dr Madhu.
The surgery was successful, and the patient recovered quickly, being discharged just five days later. With support from the hospital management, the procedure was carried out at a very low cost.
