Canada to Open Embassy in Myanmar

Yangon, Jul 17 (IANS): Canada will open an embassy in Myanmar for the first time, Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird has said.

Baird, who was in Thailand as part of his two-week tour of Asian countries, also said that Myanmar already has its embassy in Ottawa, the Mizzima News reported Monday.

Canada lifted most of its trade and investment ban against Myanmar in April following the government's recent political reforms.

Canada's decision to open its embassy comes days after the US re-established its diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level with Myanmar, first since 1990.
