Threat of Terrorism Remains in Punjab: Chidambaram

Chandigarh, Jul 13 (IANS): Home Minister P. Chidambaram Friday said the threat of terrorism remains in Punjab but expressed confidence about the government's ability to tackle any attempt to thwart peace in the border state.

Addressing media persons here along with his cabinet colleagues Ambika Soni and Pawan Kumar Bansal, Chidambaram said the threat of terrorism has not been completely wiped out from Punjab.

He said information from persons arrested in the state had revealed that "threat of terrorism remains" in Punjab though it was not of the same level as in the 1980s and '90s.

Chidambaram said the most serious incident in the recent past was the recovery of 5.6 kg RDX near Ambala in October and the arrest of two BKI (Babbar Khalsa International) terrorists from Delhi in December last year.

He said the state and central governments were sharing intelligence information.

"I am confident that if anyone indulges (in acts of terror), we will be able to control it," Chidambaram said.
