Sullia, Jul 13: In quite an amusing incident, what started off as a marriage between a young girl and a boy ended up in their engagement.
The families had fixed the marriage for Thursday July 12, but at the eleventh hour it came to light that the girl, Shyamala was a minor, only 16.
Daughter of the late Beltha from Badimule,Shyamala's marriage was fixed with Suresh (22), son of Chaniyar from Chendemoole at Kanakamajal.
When the issue came to the notice of child development project officer (CDPO) Narayana Neerabidire, he spoke to the families and stopped the marriage.
However, as the marriage had already been publicly announced and preparations made and people invited, it was decided to hold an engagement ceremony. With the intervention of COPO supervisor Shailaja and other officials, families agreed to wait until the girl turns 18. Their marriage was then fixed for August 18, 2014.
The marriage agreement was signed by the families in the presence of the officials.
