Mangalore, Jul 7: ‘Vanamahotsava’ the festival of forests is celebrated throughout the country from July 1-7 every year.
At LCS the Vanamahotsava celebration started with a drawing and painting competition based on the theme Vanamahotsava eith the motto of 'Plant a tree and save the planet'. Several students also took active part in the poster making on topics such as environment, nature, afforestation etc.
The grand finale for Vanamahotsava was celebrated on July 7, in the LCS auditorium. Dr Victor Machado, Manager LCS presided over the function. Clifford Lobo, range forest officer was the chief guest for the programme.
Clifford initiated the project ‘Haseeru Mangaluru’ in order to make Mangalore greener. In this venture saplings have been planted in and around city limits, schools and highways. He inaugurated the project by giving saplings to Dr Victor Machado, Fr Ferdinand Gonsalves, principal, LCS and also to Manith Shetty, the gardening minister of LCS. He also spoke about the importance of trees and to plant more saplings for the better future. Dr. Victor Machado enlightened the gathering by saying “Forests are the lungs of the environment. If trees are cut then the environment dies”.
Students of class VI to VIII put up a wonderful play on ‘Beauty of Vanamahotsava.
The students of LCS enjoyed the entire week and learnt many things especially to nurture the trees. The programme ended by giving saplings to the students to plant and to nurture them well.
This programme delivered the message “Join the Green Brigade, to form a Green Decade”.
