Kundapur: 13-Year-Old Boy Drowns in a Pond at Hemmadi

Kundapur, Jul 5: A 13-year-old boy got drowned after slipping into a pond near Yennebaalu of Kanyanakudlu in Hattiangadi on Wednesday July 4.

The boy is identified as Anup, son of Chandra Billava and Parvathi.

The incident took place near his house when Anup left to the fields in the morning for some outdoor work after breakfast.

The fields were filled with water due to heavy rains during the past couple of weeks. It is speculated that the boy might have slipped into the pond while walking close to the fields. Santhosh Shetty, grama panchayat president, Susheela, taluk panchayat member, Shankar Shetty, Kenchnoor Subanna Shetty visited the spot and consoled the family.

Chandra Billava belongs to a poor section of the community and is a driver by profession. He has two daughters while, Anup was the only son .

Anup was studying at the Tallur Church School and had completed grade seven. He was appreciated by the villagers for his good behavior.
 
His mother Parvathi was suffering from a brain tumor and got it operated on last October.

Anup’s death will linger on with the grieving family.

    Kaibattal, Kadri where we lived is surrounded by ponds, lakes, wells & rivulets. Every year one or more children were drowning or getting washed away. Hence our Grandfather forced all the children to learn swimming at an early age. I learnt swimming when I was in second standard. We also received lessons from him like go with the current, do not try to swim against the current etc.

    With so many drowning deaths reported, parents & schools should teach children to swim. Let the life guards help. This will save lives.
