Mangalore, Jun 22: Haleangady gram panchayat that was always in the news for corruption, investigations by Lokayukta, uproar during council meetings, and picketing by the villagers for water woes, faced a no-confidence motion collectively by the Congress and ruling party BJP members on Wednesday June 20.

Assistant commissioner (AC) Dr Venkatesh M V conducted the proceedings on Wednesday morning. Efforts were being made since one-and-a-half-years to hold the no-confidence motion by the opposition and their task was eased by the ruling BJP members who supported them.

Addressing media persons, AC Dr Venkatesh said that the no-confidence-motion was proved with 16 members of the total 20. “Gram panchayat president Mahabala Salian, against whom a no-confidence-motion was moved, has to hand over all the papers related to gram panchayat, office keys, and all that belongs to gram panchayat to panchayat development officer (PDO). The Tahsildar will decide on the date to hold the elections and till then vice-president Mamata Mendon will oversee the affairs at the gram panchayat,” he added.

Dr Venkatesh was accompanied by personal assistant Shankar Suvarna, electioneering officer Gundu Rao, and PDO Loknath.

The members congratulated acting president Mamata Mendon on the occasion.
