Udupi, Jun 21: “There is no practice of keeping records of veteran Yakshagana artistes and their distinct contributions in promoting Tulunadu contemporary art over the past 50 years. However, recording this is essential for posterity,” said Karnataka Yakshagana Academy president Professor M L Samaga.
Prof Samaga was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of ‘Govinda Vaibhava’, an arts exhibition of Tenkutittu style of veteran Yakshagana artiste K Govind Bhat, introspection on Govind Bhat’s achievement and recording of his distinct achievement and felicitation programme, which was held under the aegis of Sodhe Vadiraja Mutt at Rajangan of Sri Krishna Mutt on Monday June 18.
“Although there is confusion about the origins of Yakshagana, whether its Udupi, Dakshina Kannada or Uttar Kannada, it is certain that the revival in Yakshagana is taking place in Udupi,” said Prof Samaga.
Entrepreneur Pramod Madhwaraj said that Bhat deserves felicitations in Udupi as it is perceived that Yakshagana originated in Udupi. “The recording of his achievement will educate the new generations,” added Madwaraj.
