Mangalore, Jun 20: Heavy rains caused damage to houses, roads and properties in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kundapur here on Monday June 19.
Heavy rains that lashed across the districts led to loss of life, property and various other calamities. There were several areas in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi which received high intensity rain. Places like Puttur, Bantwal, Kinnigoli, Mulky, Subramanya and Beltangady witnessed heavy rainfall. While Surathkal-Ullal received moderate rains with thunder,severe rainfall was witnessed in Moodabidri.
Lack of drains further aggravated the citizens as roads and houses were inundated. In Ajjavara gram of Sulia, a house belonging to a resident Amanni was damaged causing a loss of Rs 5000. A tree collapsed on Yenekallu Shivarams Bhat’s house causing damage to 250 tiles. In another incident, a compound wall of Vishvanath near VK Park in Urvastore collapsed causing harm to a neighbouring house belonging to Pushpa. Coconut and banana tress belonging to Vishvanath were also washed away by the rains. Deputy mayor Amithakala has promised to help on this regard.
Heavy rains poured at night which resulted in damage to the roads and manholes of Hogabaillu Maleraya Temple in Urva Store. Maravoor railway bridge was also undermined. Heavy rains coupled with increasing soil erosion in Padushedde Kudru caused havoc to many houses.
Udupi
Udupi also witnessed heavy rains causing pain to people. Daily commuters faced problems as water rushed into national highways. Krishna Shetty belonging to Kidiyoor gram faced a huge loss amounting to Rs 50,000 due to house damage. Problem of water clogging was witnessed in Koteshwar bypass road resulting in ditches proving danger to people. Vehicles travelling from Kundapur and Udupi face a lot of problem at night near Kotashwar bypass. Shadashiva Prabhu, sub divisional officer and police personnel visited the place and necessary precaution was taken.
Kundapur
Continous rainfall in Kundapur resulted in inundation of low-lying areas. In some places like Beejadi, Kumbashi, Kome where water rushed into houses causing severe damages and crops being washed away.
Gangolli, Koteshwar, Thekatte, Kome, Kodi, Hemmadi, Kollur, Jadkala, Mudhur, jaddinagadhe, Siddapur, Jannadi, Haladi, maravanthe, Salunda witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in the past 24 hours along with disruption of power supply.
Many houses faced danger in Bijadi Arasa Bettu and Gopadi Golibettu as water rushed in and many connecting roads are also damaged. Shekar Poojari belonging to Kadoor slipped into a river losing his life. His body was found near Bhalkuru on Tuesday Morning at 11 am.
Kodi Sea in Kundapur has already turned rough as boundary stones are washed away by waves and neighbouring places are in danger. Officials have visited the place promising implementation of quick action.
