Mangalore, May 31: The city police arrested a person accused in the murder case of 75-year-old Lalita Poojary on Wednesday May 30.
The arrested has been identified as Abdul Razak, son of Isubu Beary, Zareena Manzil, Ballyoor village of Mulky town panchayat, near here.
Poojary, a native of Kolachekambla, in the neighbourhood of Mulki, near here, was slain on November 18, 2011.
The accused Abdul Razak confessed to gaining access to the victim’s tile house by climbing onto the roof and descending on the wooden ceiling. He tied her legs and stuffed a piece of cloth into her mouth. He removed her heavy gold earrings and murdered her.
The police began investigations into the case after women’s organizations complained to top police officers. Accordingly, a team of policemen led by ACP M Puttamadayya got the breakthrough in nabbing Razak, who was accused of several theft cases in the locality.
The police recovered 250 gm of jewellery worth Rs 7 lac, cash amounting to Rs 41,240, copper vessels weighing 39.5 kg and worth Rs 16,000, and water taps worth Rs 15,000 from Razak.
Police officers T Basheer Ahmed and Chandrahas M S, policemen Kantappa, Umesh, Harishekar, Ravi, Prakash, Dhanaraj, and Surendra were involved in this operation.
SP Seemanth Kumar Singh announced prizes to the police team involved in the breakthrough of this case.
