Kasargod, May 10: The district-level protest held here on Wednesday May 9, to urge the state administration to rehabilitate Endosulfan victims, to oppose the delay in awarding compensation to Endosulfan victims and the stance taken by state administration in favour of Endosulfan company. The protest was held on the basis of a call given by LDF.
The protest was more successful in the gram panchayat where majority of Endosulfan victims live, and in other areas it was partially successful.
The traffic on the national highway was as usual. The bus services and traffic was stalled in the limits of gram panchayats and shops were closed fully in Kumbla town and a few areas in the city. The protest had no effect in Uppala, Hosangady, Manjeshwar, and neighbouring regions. The shops were open as usual and traffic was normal. Instances of blocking of traffic by the protesters were reported in Sitangoli, Konnakkadu, Panattur, and nearby villages.
The state-owned buses plying from Kasargod to Mangalore, and Kasargod to Kannur were not affected by the protest. The protest put normal life out of gear in rural villages. LDF activists staged a protest rally from new city bus stand to old bus stand. The transport vehicles distributing newspapers, milk, and automobiles carrying wedding parties were spared from the protest. The state-owned buses made the trips as usual in a few rural villages, while the private bus services plied as usual between Bayaru – Uppala, Permude – Bandyodu, Varkady – Miyapadavu-Hosangady. In a few cases, a some of the bus routes stalled services after a few trips.
LDF leaders T Krishnan, Karivellur Vijayan, S Udaya Kumar, V Rajan, and K Bhaskaran led the protest.
