Biman Bose may Face Suit

Kolkata, May 4 (IANS): Sabita Basu, wife of suspended CPI-M leader and former MP Anil Basu, Friday rubbished allegations of "corruption and nepotism" against her husband and threatened to file a defamation case against state party secretary Biman Bose.

"Why did Biman Bose take such a step (to suspend Anil)? To malign my husband and family? How could a person sitting in the top post try to malign another person? Do such things also happen in the CPI-M? I never had such an idea," Sabita Basu told reporters.

"Anil Basu might not file a defamation case against Biman Bose, but I won't accept the allegations. I will surely file a defamation case against Biman Bose," she said.

Anil Basu, who was also present at the conference, alleged that after the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) suspended him earlier this month, "atrocities" were being carried out against his family.

"I am mentally disturbed… no one had earlier raised such allegations against me," he said.

The decision to place Basu, formerly a Hooghly district strongman, under three-month suspension for indulging in corruption and nepotism was taken by the party's West Bengal state committee.

Basu kicked up a controversy with his comments against Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee ahead of assembly polls last year.

This led to widespread condemnation and allegedly cost the CPI-M sizeable number of votes.

Basu is the first leader to be suspended from the party following the Left's rout in the 2011 polls.

He was earlier dropped from the state committee as part of a CPI-M process to weed out "undesirable elements".
