Madikeri, Apr 30: Chaurira Achachya, veteran hockey player from Madikeri who captained the Karnataka hockey died of heart attack even as he was celebrating the victory of his team.
He had just finished playing a match in the 16th annual local hockey cup.
On Sunday April 29 at around 4 pm, the 59-year-old Achchayya, who had played for the state for 9 years, was celebrating the victory of his team after beating the opposition by 2 goals. At this age too, he had the fitness, stamina and the momentum to play the game. He shook hands with the opposition players, the referees, the technical team and his teammates.
But the celebration could not last long as he collapsed at 3.55 pm in the dressing room, and though Columbia hospital doctors who were present in the ground rushed to him, he could not be saved.
Achchayya, popularly known as 'Hari', leaves behind his wife Suni, son Niran and daughter Dr Nithya.
