Udupi, Apr 28: Under the aegis of SMS College and Brahmavar Sports Club, a sports training summer camp is underway at SMS College grounds, Brahmavar, from Tuesday April 17 to Thursday May17. It’s being organized for the successive eighth year.
Nearly 100 students are participating in cricket, tennis, skating, athletics and other categories of sports. Top trainers are training the students of primary, high school, and pre-university colleges of the district. A majority of students from the neighbourhood of Brahmavar are participating in the camp daily from morning to evening. A few students from Kundapur, Byndoor, Karkala, and neighbouring areas, are also attending.
Cricketers Vijay Alva and Raghu are training 24 students in cricket. Arvind from Bangalore is training students in tennis, while Laxminarayan Upadhya from Udupi is providing training in skating, while Tilak is training students in athletics.
The summer camp enables participants to develop physical and mental agility. The participants can also make the best use of their summer holiday to develop their talents in chosen sports and help them excel in their annual sports events at schools and colleges. Its due to the united efforts of SMS Education Institution and Brahmavar Sports Club, that Brahmavar has been emerging as a hub of sports. They have been regularly organizing sports for enthusiasts.
The general perception that tennis is a game of the rich and limited to towns and city folks is not true. SMS College, Brahmavar, has three tennis courts where budding tennis players get mentored by professionals. They charge fees that are affordable to camp participants and are successful in promoting budding sports players, while the sports facilities in cities charge exorbitant fees.
