Mangalore, Apr 23: In yet another case of its kind, a water pipe at Pumpwell here burst on Monday April 23, causing a heavy loss of water.
At the same time, pipes at Nagori and Simon Lane near Capitanio also broke leading to further loss.
According to locals at the spot, the pipe at Pumpwell was already leaking the previous night on Sunday April 22. On Monday at around 12.30 pm, the pressure in the pipe increased and burst.
The force was such that water splashed to a distance of about 20 ft, spraying on passing vehicles. The vehicular movement was stopped for a while, leading to heavy traffic snarl.
The pipe at Pumpwell supplies water from Thumbay dam to Bendoorwell tank. Immediately after the incident, emergency measures were taken to stop the water supply at the dam. Hence, the residents across the three areas are facing severe problems.
Though the force of the water has reduced, it is still flowing out of the pipe. The pipes are made of wrought iron and are very old. There is cement covering on top. Sources said that as water was being supplied on alternate days, air was blocked inside which led the pipes to burst.
Kankanady rural police have arrived at the spot. MCC executive engineer Nenge Gowda is yet to arrive.
At Nagori, the force was such that the water splashed on the roof of a shop on the other end of the road.
The city is already reeling under water crisis, with most areas being supplied water in tankers. The latest incident has further worsened the crisis.
This is the second such incident in less than a month. On March 26, a pipe had burst in Bendoorwell, causing severe loss of water and damage to shops.
