Mangalore, Apr 18: An anti-dowry convention organized by Al-Wafa charitable trust was inaugurated at Town Hall here on Wednesday April 18.
In his inaugural address Mangalore Qazi Twaqa Ahmed Musliyar said that change of mindset among youths is an answer to abolishing dowry practice.
"In Gulf countries 'mahar' (amount of money or gold given by the groom to the bride) is practiced and grooms have been suffering as a result. Though nuptial bank was formed by the government there, it did not solve the problem," he said and added that dowry practiced here has caused severe problems in the lives of girls getting married.
He called upon the rich people to practice simple wedding ceremonies first, which will then be ultimately followed by others in the community.
Mohammed Baddruddin, president, Al-Wafa charitable trust, Mangalore welcomed and delivered the keynote address. Abdul Razak Ananthady compered.
Later, a discussion followed on the topic 'How to create a dowry free society?'. Umar U H, chief secretary, Al-Wafa charitable trust, Mangalore spoke on the occasion.
In the afternoon, a multi-lingual poetry session will be held from 2 pm to 3 pm.
