Mangalore, Apr 18: The city and various parts of Dakshina Kannada district experienced rains past midnight on Tuesday April 17. The city, which has been reeling under water shortage, hopes that its water resources will get recharged with the summer rains.
The water level at Tumbe dam rose to 9.8 ft from previous day’s 9.2 ft on Tuesday. There has been a marked increase in water level from 8.1 ft on Sunday and 8.2 ft the previous day.
The level rose after water was released from the minor hydro electric project’s dam at Kolyadakatta. The city corporation expects to start receiving water from Lakya dam in Kudremukh with effect from Wednesday, as interlinking works were completed on Tuesday. Two MGD of water is expected to be received from this line, and the same will be routed to Suratkal and Panambur areas, sourses said.
Because of filling of mud in the erstwhile tanks, abandonment of water sources and unregulated drilling of bore wells, underground water table in the district has suffered further this summer. The city corporation and various gram panchayats are trying to meet the needs of parched areas with the help of water tankers.
