Mangalore: Faithful Gather in Parishes Across City on Maundy Thursday

Mangalore, Apr 5: Maundy Thursday was solemnly observed by devotees across the parishes here on Thursday April 5.

Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza offered the Eucharistic Mass at Rosario Cathedral in the evening, along with parish priest Fr Stanly Goveas, Fr Alwyn Serrao and Fr Roshan.

Bishop Aloysius said explained the significance of Maundy Thursday and said that one of the commandements is to 'love your neighbour as yourself'. "Just as Jesus sacrificed his life for the people, we should also give ourselves in the service of others," he stressed.

The Christian community was present in large numbers in all the churches.

The Holy Mass was observed symbolically by the priests by breaking bread and sharing it among the altar boys. 

The ritual of washing the feet of the disciples by the Bishop and the priests was also observed. This gesture denotes humility and is based on the practice of Jesus Christ washing the apostles' feet.

Maundy Thursday signifies the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. The day is followed by Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday denoting Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

    Very good pictures by Daya and Spoorthi. You both have taken every shot from all angles. It was good to see the priests, parishners and the musicians and not forgetting the singers who took part in the mass on Maundy Thursday.I wish you all a HAPPY EASTER.

    Maundy Thursday was celebrated in all Catholic parishes in Mangalore. The Christian community was present in large numbers in all churches.

    Though I live far away from Mangalore in Oldenburg Germany Daijiworld gives me the opportunity to read all these wonderful articles what is going on in the diocese of Mangalore.

    The faithful gathered at churches prayed, worshipped and thanked Jesus and the Church lovingly commemorates the institution of two great sacraments by Christ: the Eucharist and Holy Orders.

    The intimate connection between the two is easily detectable in the gospels, particularly in Luke’s account of the last supper. “And He took bread, and when He had given thanks He broke it and gave it to them, saying: ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ And, likewise, the cup after supper, saying: ‘This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant in my blood’” (Luke 22, 19-20).

    This is indeed a mystery and difficult to understand only believers believe in it.

    This is very inspiring. All over the world Christians celebrate today and tonight large numbers of Christians will go to church tonight here in Oldenburg.

    During Easter and Christmas the churches are full of people even in Oldenburg who attend Holy Mass.

    It is a special time to reflect and to spend time with family, relatives and friends.

    I feel joy to celebrate Easter and especially to strengthen my meaning of life.

    In our globalised world million are looking desperately for a meaning of life and the Gospel offers so much: dignity, joy, happiness, love, respect, tolerance and mutual understanding.

    The Gospel gives hope and if we experience harsh times in our life we can be certain we are never alone.

    Easter makes life rich and we shall share our joy and happiness with others and always see the need of others.

    The Resurrection of Jesus cannot be scientifically explained because it is a mystery. But how many do really believe in it?

    Especially in everyday life is it often extremely difficult to be faithful. I live in a secular environment where the Church does not play any important role or has any impact on people.

    One who visits Oldenburg where I live, sees lots of churches, buildings but without believers only few.

    This is the reality of Easter 2012.

    We shall be optimistic and always have hope that Easter is a new beginning in our life.
