Ajman, Mar 19: ‘Annual Sports Festival-2012’ was recently hosted by Gulf Medical University (GMU), here. It was the biggest inter-collegiate ever held in UAE.
As many as 25 leading colleges and universities and four high schools in UAE participated in the weeklong 11th Annual Sports festival.
All the participants vying for the coveted trophies exhibited high standards of spirited sportsmanship while participating in the various tournaments.
The participating colleges and universities in the annual sports festival-2012 were: College of Medicine, GMU, Ajman, College of Pharmacy, GMU, Ajman, College of Dentistry, GMU, Ajman, College of Allied Health Sciences, GMU, Ajman, College of Graduate Studies, GMU, Ajman, GMC Hospital, Ajman, GMC Hospital, Sharjah, GMC hospital, Fujairah, Ajman University of Science and Technology, BITS Pilani, Dubai, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology, Emirates College for Management and Information Technology, American University of Sharjah, Manipal University, Dubai, Preston University, Ajman, University of Wollongong, Dubai, University of Sharjah, Emirates Aviation College, Dubai, Skyline University, College, American University of Ras Al khaimah, Canadian University in Dubai, London American City College, Ras Al Khaimah, Murdoch University, Dubai, RAK Medical and Health Sciences University Heriot Watt University. Al Sadiq School-Dubai, Millenium School-Dubai, DPS- Sharjah and Dubai Scholar’s School were among the four schools that participated in the sports festival.

Manipal University emerged winners while Gulf Medical University came out as runners up in the friendly girls cricket match. Intra-University games (GMU) were held before the commencement of the GMU Annual Sports Festival, 2012.
Results of the Intra-University (GMU) held during the Sports Festival 2012 are: In cricket– President XI Vs Provost XI, the runners up were President’s XI and the winning team was Provost’s XI. In volleyball– GMUA Vs GMCH, the runners up were GMUA and the winning team was GMC Fujairah. In badminton (girls singles), the runner up was Judditt Anna and winner was Ghaniya Fathima. In badminton (girls doubles), runners up were Judditt and Faiza, winners were Rabia and Nargis. In badminton, staff singles (men), runner up- Shaik Hassan A and winner- Farwaz. In table tennis – Students Singles (boys), runner up- Osama, winner- Waqas Usmani. In badminton – Staff Singles (women), runner up - Sherly Ajay, winner- Dr Syed Shehnaz Ilays. In table tennis– Staff Singles (men), runner up - Dr Hemant Garg and winner was Joseph David.
The prize distribution ceremony was held at the amphitheatre, Body & Souls Health Club & Spa, Ajman. A total of sixty five trophies, certificates were awarded to the winners and runners-up on the concluding day of the sports competition. Chief guest Prof Gita Ashok Raj – Provost, GMU along with Prof Mohd-Arifulla presented trophies to the winners and runners-up of various inter-universities tournaments while Prof Manda Venkatramana and Prof Ishtiyaq Shafi presented trophies to winners and runners-up of various Intra-University Sports events.

Keeping in view of the enthusiasm and the true sportsman spirit generated amongst the students and the organizers during the GMU annual sports festival 2012. Gulf Medical University, Ajman plans to organize the sports event in an even bigger scale by inviting more colleges and universities in the UAE to participate in the GMU Annual Sports Festival in the future”, commented Prof Ishtiyaq Shafie, chief organizer of GMU annual sports festival.
