Kundapur, Mar 7: Prohibitory orders were issued in Gangolli and surrounding areas till March 11, after some miscreants formed a gang and stoned Jamia Masjid in Gangolli in the taluk, and a few houses in the neighbourhood, on the night of Monday March 5. Relating to this incident, eight different cases were registered at Gangolli police station. So far, the police have arrested 16 people in this connection.
The president of the mosque, Abdul Hamid Arehole, registered a police complaint about the incident. The other complaints came from the owners of houses which were targeted by the gang.
Reportedly, the gang, which was armed with bottles, stones, and cans, had assembled near the mosque at night. They started pelting stones at the mosque and houses, but vanished after a people gathered there to see what was happening. The miscreants numbered around 20, it is said.
The complainants have named locals, Manoj Poojary, Srinivas, Harish, Surendra Kharvi, Pravin, Siddu, Soorya, Shiva Kharvi, Mohan Kharvi, Nityanand, Nagendra Poojary, Naveen Kharvi, Prakash, Sunil, Yogish Devadiga, Pashant, Sandeep, Vishwaraj Kharvi, and several others. What provoked the gang to resort to stone pelting has remained a mystery.
Udupi district superintendent o police, Boralingaiah, deputy superintendent of police, Shekhar Agadi, Kundapur circle inspector, Madan Gaonkar, and others rushed to the spot and guided the operations.
