Mangalore, Mar 6: On Monday March 5, officials of the city corporation raided various places within the city, and seized 500 kg banned plastic bags, after finding that they were blatantly being used by different vendors in violation of ban placed on their use.
A team of the city corporation led by environment engineer, Manjunath R Shetty, conducted the raid under the directions of corporation commissioner, Dr Harish Kumar. Health inspectors, Santosh and Karunakar, and supervisor, Raja, were members of this team, while another team led by assistant health officer, S N Bhat, comprising health inspectors, Babu Mallanna, Bharat, Sushant and Ramu Nirmala, conducted raids at central market, Bunder, Bibi Alabi Road, Kadri Market area etc.
Traders and vendors including those trading in vegetables, fish, flowers, as well as street vendors, were fined during the raid. The team also visited a private godown in Bunder area, after being tipped off about the presence of huge quantity of banned plastic there. However, as the godown was found locked, and as information about its owners could not be gathered, the team returned empty-handed. The officials said that they are investigating the issue further.
