Mumbai, Feb 22: Dr Ramakrishna Marate, a native of Belgaum and renowned Kannada and Marathi litterateur, columnist, and translator, has been chosen for the ‘Varadaraja Adya Prashasti’ by the metro-based Karnataka Sangh.
Karnataka Sangh has been conferring the Prashasti on an individual or organization in recognition of their extraordinary service in promoting Kannada and Marathi culture. It has so far conferred the Prashasti on 25 distinguished personalities since 1990, including Bharat Ratna Pandit Bheemsen Joshi, Gangubai Hangal, Pam Shivanand Patil, Uma Kulkarni, and Saraju Katkar.
The Prashasti comprises Rs 11,000 in cash, a citation letter, and public honour. The Prashasti will be conferred on Dr Marate during the function scheduled to be held here on Saturday February 25.
Fifty-three-year-old Dr Marate is the first rank holder and gold medalist in M A from Karnataka University, Dharwad, in 1982. He has earned his doctorate for his thesis on professional theater in Uttar Karnataka. He is the Kannada lecturer in Bavurao Kakatkar College, Belgaum.
Dr Marate has translated over 15 books from Marathi to Kannada and also an equal number from Kannada to Marathi.
He is the recipient of several awards including Karnataka Natak Academy and Belgaum District Literary Foundation.
