Udupi, Feb 17: Congress leaders paid rich tributes to Dr V S Acharya at a condolence meet held here on Thursday February 16.
Rajya Sabha member and Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, in his condolence message, said, "We were always exchanging advice on many issues. We have not come across any difference over political issues. He was a national leader and a gem of a person."
M A Gafoor said, "It’s significant that due to the efforts of Dr Acharya, the practice of carrying human excreta by civic workers was banned in his native district."
Pramod Madhwaraj said, "He was cordial with opposition parties." He cited an incident wherein Dr Acharya instructed police to register a case against BJP activists who were involved in setting fire to private property in Malpe. "He never discriminated against people on the lines of political parties, religion, and caste. He was a great national leader."
Former state minister Vasant Salian said, "We both entered Vidhana Sabha after winning from our respective constituencies in 1983. He was cordial with everyone and opposition parties too."
Vinay Kumar Sorake said, "Despite political upheavals that spanned nearly 45 years of his life, he was simple, dignified, and humble both in his political career and general life. He had humanity. Dr Acharya had cheered me when I faced defeat in the legislative assembly polls against him. He had a plan to provide drinking water supply from the Swarna river."
The district women’s Congress president Veronica Cornelio said, "He stuck to his political ideology at all times, and led a dignified political career."
The district youth Congress president Amrut Shenoy said, "I was astonished about his knowledge of society, fisheries, caste, religion, and national politics. He was impartial in executing development work. It’s a great loss for the state and the nation."
