Mangalore, Feb 10: Policemen belonging to Panambur station succeeded in arresting eight persons, accused of stealing valuable copper items stocked at Toyo company’s premises in Bykampady here. These copper items were meant for supply to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL).
The arrested persons have been identified as Samshuddin (32) from Krishnapura, Faisal (23) from Chokkabettu 8th block, Kalandar Basha (25) from Kulai Pragati Nagar, Imtiaz (30) from Kulai, Abdul Rahim (42) from Katipalla second block, Syed Jaseed (19) from Chokkabettu eighth block, Samshuddin (25), tempo driver from Krishnapura, and Nazeer Ahmed from Krishnapura fifth block.
Abdul Rahim is the watchman of the company. The arrested persons have been accused of stealing 19 barrels of cable, two barrels instrument cables, copper glass, copper tube etc, totally valued at over ten lac rupees. The policemen suspect that the same gang was involved with the theft of things worth over Rs 20 lac in the past.
Abdul Rahim, watchman of the company, who is the main accused, had planned the entire operation, the policemen said. They have recovered things worth three lac rupees, and the tempo used for transporting stolen items, from the accused. These items are manufactured in Toyo for being supplied to MRPL. The accused were produced in court.
The policemen are also on the lookout for company employees, Yakub, and Oswald D’Souza, who allegedly helped the thieves in their act. The two have gone missing.
A police team led by circle inspector, Valentine D’Souza and police sub inspector, Keerti Kumar, made these arrests.
