Jan 27: Agneepath, as the name indicates has ‘Fire’ in it and the smoke emitted is sure to stay in the minds of the viewers even after they step out the theatre, thanks to the efforts taken by its makers and the performers in the movie who make it as good as the original (Agneepath 1990, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun Chakraborty).
Story Outline and Analysis
The movie directed by Karan Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar has a tale of revenge, as already known by the ones who have watched the original one, released in 1990. The challenge for the remake was to maintain the essence of the original, refine it and make it appealing to the present-day crowd in theatres, which it successfully manages to do.
The film begins with the age-old conflict of a reformist school-teacher versus the shrewd zamindar, duping the villagers of their lands. The village here is Mandwa. When the honest master is brutally killed by deadly Kancha Cheena (Sanjay Dutt), his son Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) vows to take revenge and destroy his perpetrator at any cost.
He goes to Mumbai and joins hands with Rauf Lala (Rishi Kapoor) upon realization that he would need powerful support to demolish Kancha. He plans his every move cleverly.
Vijay's mother (Zarina Wahab), who was pregnant when Vijay had to leave Mandwa gives birth to a baby girl but Vijay conceals his identity from his sister to save her from any danger. When they reunite later you have some of the most touching scenes performed so naturally and brilliantly. Vijay’s childhood friend Kaali (Priyanka Chopra) always stands by his side and with time builds intimate relationship with him despite being aware of the dark days ahead. With all the hurdles and threats, how the protagonist Vijay manages to take revenge is the core of the movie. Vijay follows the path of fire (Agneepath) with audacity and grit.
The movie is written well. Piyush Mishra's dialogues are imposing and make an impact. Cinematography by Ravi K Chandran and Kiran Deohans is amazing. Akiv Ali's editing is skillful.
Cast
Though the climax of this revenge saga might be predictable it is the elegant performances that keep you glued till the end. Stepping into the shoes of Big B, Hrithik Roshan here has done a commendable job in his own style. Watching Agneepath you can once again say Hrithik has really grown as an actor.
Sanjay Dutt, the baddie here, first of all makes you open your mouth wide with a mere glance at his huge physic, which in itself seems scary. Performance wise too he is a perfect villain. Rishi Kapoor too as Rauf Lala was incredible. His look suits his role well and so does his acting. Priyanka doesn't have much to do but is cheerful as always. 15-year-old Bhopal girl Kanika Tiwari who is Hrithik’s sister in the movie is too cute and innocent.
Music
The one song that stands out in the movie is the famous Chikni Chameli. With vocals by Shreya Ghoshal the song has a wide appeal mainly due to Katrina Kaif. She is truly stupendous in her performance. Other songs may not really appeal much to the modern crowd but since the movie is based on 1990’s scenario, it goes well.
Conclusion
The movie pays a perfect reverence to the original and at the same time doesn’t patently emulate it. In that case this one is a perfect remake, worth watching. Go for it to relish the power-packed performances.
Ye mahan drishya hai,
Chal raha manushya hai,
Ashru, shwet, rakta se lathpath lathpath lathpath...
Agneepath, Agneepath, Agneepath…
