Puttur, May 1: A day after a woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in the rubber plantation at Artyadka in Koltige village, fresh panic gripped the region on April 29 night as another elephant sighting was reported near Perlampady.

Residents reported loud noises of trees being damaged near the Muttu Mariyamma Temple, a short distance from Perlampady town. The area is densely populated with hundreds of houses, causing fear among locals.

It is suspected that the elephant seen near Perlampady might be the same one involved in fatal incident on April 28 at Artyadka. Meanwhile, forest officials have confirmed that four to five elephants have already entered the forested Kaniyaru area of Koltige village and are occasionally straying into nearby farmlands.

Following reports of the elephant's presence, forest department personnel began efforts to drive it away using firecrackers and noise.

Rubber tappers had already demanded action on Monday to drive out the elephant responsible for the woman’s death. However, as of April 29 evening, the animal had not been located, and forest officials continued their search operations in the region without success.
