Mangaluru, Apr 29: Officials from the department of mines and geology raided a site near the Maravoor railway bridge where illegal sand mining was underway, seizing 150 metric tons of sand along with machinery and a tipper truck worth approximately Rs 5 lac.

The raid was conducted around 3 pm on Monday. However, those involved in the mining managed to flee the spot. The illegal activity was being carried out right beneath the railway track, violating regulations.

According to the rules of the department of mines and geology, sand mining is prohibited within 100 meters on either side of bridges. Despite this, mining was being conducted in clear violation of the order.
