Bengaluru, Apr 14: In a disturbing incident that has once again drawn attention to growing distress among men in domestic disputes, a software engineer attempted self-immolation near the Governor’s residence in Bengaluru on Sunday.
The individual has been identified as Junaid Ahmad, a native of Chikkaballapura district. According to police sources, Junaid allegedly poured petrol on himself and was preparing to set himself ablaze when officers at the scene intervened just in time.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Junaid was allegedly facing severe mental trauma due to ongoing domestic issues. He claimed that his wife had falsely accused him in a dowry harassment case and had filed multiple other legal complaints against him.
Frustrated with what he described as inaction by local authorities, Junaid said he had tried to lodge a counter-complaint at the Chikkaballapura police station, but it was not accepted. Enraged by this and feeling helpless, he reportedly chose to protest by attempting suicide in front of Raj Bhavan.
The police on duty at the time swiftly stopped the act and took Junaid into custody. He was brought to the Vidhana Soudha police station, where officers listened to his grievances and provided counselling before releasing him.
This incident follows a series of similar cases in Bengaluru, highlighting a troubling trend. Just last week, on April 7, another software professional allegedly died by suicide after living apart from his wife and child for two years.
In another recent case, a man set himself on fire in front of his wife's residence in Nagarbhavi after failing to persuade her to withdraw a divorce petition. In December 2024, a police officer also allegedly took his own life, reportedly due to domestic issues and pressure from his wife's family.
