LPG prices hiked by Rs 50 for all consumers, effective April 8

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Apr 7: Consumers across the board will face an increase in the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, with Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announcing a Rs 50 hike per 14.2 kg cylinder, applicable to both subsidizsed and non-subsidised categories, effective from April 8.

This price adjustment will impact beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) as well as general consumers. "For PMUY beneficiaries, the price will rise from Rs 500 to Rs 550 per cylinder. For other consumers, it will increase from Rs 803 to Rs 853," stated the minister. He further clarified that this revision is part of the regular price review conducted every two to three weeks.

This increase follows a recent price reduction on April 1, where oil marketing companies had provided some relief by lowering the price of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 41. In the national capital, Delhi, the revised retail selling price for commercial cylinders currently stands at Rs 1,762 per cylinder.

India relies on imports for approximately 60% of its domestic LPG consumption, making the country's LPG prices susceptible to fluctuations in the international market.

As of March 1 this year, the number of beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) had reached 10.33 crore, while the total number of active domestic LPG consumers in India stood at 32.94 crore, as per information presented in Parliament during the recently concluded session.

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi informed the Lok Sabha in a written response that while the average international price of LPG saw a significant increase of 63% from US$ 385/MT in July 2023 to US$ 629/MT in February 2025, the effective price for PMUY consumers for domestic LPG was reduced by 44% from ?903 in August 2023 to Rs 503 in February 2025.

Prior to this latest hike, the retail selling price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi was Rs 803, with PMUY consumers receiving a subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder. The price of 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinders had remained stable since August 2024.

It's unfortunate to see both the state and central governments increasing prices. The Karnataka State government seems to be in full-on recovery mode, trying to make up for the cost of the free schemes through higher charges. We have no idea what might come next.
