Mangaluru: MCC warns of heavy fines, jail for diverting rainwater into sewage

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 17: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has issued a stern warning to residents, apartment owners, businesses, and industries against diverting rainwater into the underground drainage system. Violators will face legal action along with hefty fines, MCC commissioner Ravichandra Nayak stated in an official release.

Instances of rainwater being discharged into the sewage network have been observed in some areas. This has resulted in excess water overloading the drainage system, causing sewage to overflow from manholes, creating inconvenience for the public, the commissioner said.

Connecting rainwater to the underground drainage system is strictly prohibited. Any unauthorized connection from buildings to the sewage system or manholes must be immediately removed. MCC officials will conduct site inspections to identify such violations, and strict legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply, he warned.

If found guilty of diverting rainwater into the sewage system, property owners may face a fine of Rs 1 lac and up to six years in prison under the Pollution Control Act. Additionally, under the Environmental Protection Act, violators can be fined Rs 1 lac and face five years of imprisonment, Nayak cautioned.

First-time offenders will be fined Rs 5,000. If the unauthorized connection is not removed even after a notice, an additional fine of Rs 1,000 per day will be imposed. MCC may also disconnect the water supply of violators. The unauthorized connection will be removed by the corporation at the owner's expense, with an additional penalty of Rs 25,000.

Citizens who spot unauthorized drainage connections are urged to report them by calling 0824-2220306 or via WhatsApp at 9449007722. The MCC has appealed to the public to cooperate in maintaining a clean and safe city.

The MCC has also noted cases where sewage water is being discharged into storm-water drains. This contamination poses a serious health hazard to the public. Officials will inspect and take immediate action against such violations, the commissioner added.

If MCC don't keep the flowing drains well and maintained, then where should the water go ? Should it go into people's house and then claim the damages ? Will MCC pay the damages to people's property ? Before making any statement any government body should evaluate and then decide. Our ward corporates are just useless and though being in BJP they still have hand in glove. Anything can happen in India to blame the locals and try to loot them for ever.

MMC is giving warning to public about rain water diverting or sewege etc.Do MCC have such rain water harvesting or proper system for sewage? They should check their system first whether it is functioning properly ,their employees are doing cleaning in time etc check first and warn last. Before rain season beginns they should clean and take out blockage and see if everything functions. Not enough only to punish but self do the work properly. How many times do they check in year?

A similar notice could have been issued for people who illegally throw plastic waste here and there-on streets etc if MCC had installed functional dustbins across the city. @MCC

In Ballalbagh area, on Lokkayya Shetty road , sewage water from various places is being discharged to rain water drainage system. Inspite of several visits to MCC office / Local ward Corporator and complaining of foul unbearable stench , no officials has bothered to find solution. Senior citizens are having health problems arising due to this, for which MCC officials must be held accountable. Pathetic state of affairs.

First of all MCC should have proper Drainage / sewage system in place. MCC and concerned Building authorities must make Rain Water harvesting compulsory for all the apartments and also new individual homes. So before you issue license or completion certificate, ensure you follow this rule. Check on bigger fish and catch them & fine them who leave sewage in to rainwater drains - hotels & few apartments. Citizens should start raising voices against short comings & incompetency of the MCC, contractors & engineers to have these basic facilities.

Drainage water released by hotels to rainwater draining groove of Karangalpady New Cross Road (C.G.Kamath Road) Anybody can check this Thodu. To hide this the corporator is covering the Thodu with concrete slabs. The dirty drainage water ultimately moves to the sea and the marine lifes are in danger of extinction.
