Aizawl, Feb 19: In a significant operation, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police have seized over 10 kg of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, worth Rs 71.15 crore, and arrested a drug peddler. The operation took place in the Vangkai area of Champhai district, which borders Myanmar.

The raid was conducted on Tuesday night based on secret information. The methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba or party pills, were found and seized, and the 59-year-old peddler, Vanlalruaia, a resident of Aizawl, was arrested.

The entire consignment and the arrested individual were handed over to the Zokhawthar police for further legal proceedings. Officials have expressed concern over ongoing drug smuggling in the region, particularly due to Mizoram's porous 510 km border with Myanmar, which facilitates the illegal drug trade.

This is the second major drug bust in the state within 48 hours. Earlier, on Monday, Assam Rifles seized 9.298 kg of methamphetamine worth Rs 27.90 crore and apprehended two Myanmar nationals involved in smuggling the drugs into Mizoram through Champhai.

The Assam Rifles have intensified efforts to curb the smuggling and capture the masterminds behind the drug trafficking network in the region.
