Ahmedabad, Feb 6: A group of 33 Gujarati immigrants, who were among the 104 Indians deported from the United States due to illegal immigration, arrived at Ahmedabad airport from Amritsar on Thursday morning, officials confirmed.
Following their arrival, the deported individuals, including women and children, were transported to their respective hometowns in police vehicles, Assistant Commissioner of Police, 'G' division, RD Oza stated.
"A plane carrying 33 Gujarati immigrants landed at the airport in the morning. They were among those deported from the US. We arranged police vehicles to take them to their native places," Oza told reporters at the airport.
Despite media attempts to interact with the deportees, they refrained from making any statements and immediately left in the police vehicles.
Sources revealed that a majority of them hail from districts such as Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Patan, Vadodara, and Kheda.
A US military aircraft had earlier landed in Amritsar, Punjab, on Wednesday, carrying a total of 104 Indian nationals who were deported for illegal immigration.
Family members of these individuals have claimed they were unaware of how their relatives had reached the United States.
Expressing sympathy for the deported Gujaratis, former Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel highlighted that they had traveled abroad in search of job opportunities and should not be viewed as criminals.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police, CID-Crime, Parikshita Rathod, confirmed that the authorities would not be questioning the deportees at this stage.
