Bantwal, Feb 3: A case has been registered at the Bantwal rural police station after gold ornaments worth approximately Rs 10.08 lac and Rs 3,000 in cash were stolen from a passenger’s bag while traveling on a KSRTC bus.

According to the complaint filed by 68-year-old Rajagopal Karanth, a resident of Yelahanka New Town, Bengaluru, he was traveling to his wife’s hometown, Mulkaje Maad in Maninalkuru village of Bantwal taluk, for a private family event. On the night of February 1, he boarded a KSRTC bus from Bengaluru Majestic along with his wife and son-in-law, carrying the gold ornaments in a box along with Rs 3,000 cash in his luggage bag.

During the journey, when the bus halted near Kunigal, Rajagopal, his wife, and his son-in-law left their bags inside the bus and stepped out to use the restroom. Upon reaching Karinja Cross early on February 2, he opened his bag and discovered that 144 grams of gold and the cash were missing.

Suspecting that the theft occurred either inside the bus or near the hotel at Kunigal, Rajagopal filed a complaint, following which the Bantwal rural police registered a case under IPC sections 303(2) and 305(b) (BNS) under case number 09/2025. An investigation is currently underway.

Possibility of theft is there as same type of theft happens in Aircraft also. But this seems to be a cooked-up story. Why would all the three get down the bus together to use the toilet. Secondly all the way till they reached their destination then only he realized that something is missing but did not bother to check when they came back after using the toilet at Kunigal. Had this been realized at Kunigal all the passengers would have been stuck!
