Kasargod, Dec 22: A fire broke out in a commercial building in Perla market town, gutting five shops in a mishap that occurred at midnight on Saturday.

The affected shops, located on the left side of the Badiyadka-Puttur road, include Pooja Fancy, Paigala Cloth Store, a paper distribution center, Praveen Automobiles, Sadat Store, and Gautam Cold House.

The fire was first noticed around midnight, prompting locals to attempt to extinguish it while also alerting fire service personnel. With the fire threatening to spread to nearby buildings, five fire engines from Kasargod and Manjeshwar were dispatched to the scene. After four hours of continuous efforts, the blaze was brought under control with the assistance of locals.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, but an electrical short circuit is suspected to be the reason.
