Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Dec 19: Deputy commissioner (DC) Dr K Vidyakumari has directed the engineer and contractor to complete the construction of the Indrali railway overbridge by January 10, 2025 to ensure smooth vehicular movement.

Speaking during a meeting on the progress of the overbridge construction held at the DC office auditorium on Wednesday December 18 the DC emphasized the need for swift action.

"The correspondence regarding the Indrali railway overbridge began in 2018. The district administration is receiving daily complaints from the public regarding the delay in completing the project. A weekly progress report must be submitted without fail," she stated.

Highlighting the urgency, the DC added, "The railway department has already approved the project. Civil works and iron bridge installations must proceed round the clock in two shifts. All construction activities must be completed by January 7."

The meeting was attended by SP Dr Arun K, senior engineer of Konkan Railway Gopalkrishna, assistant executive engineer of Shringeri-Chikkamagalur NH division Manjunath, and district information officer Manjunath B.

Yes if you give a deadline to finish the work,of course they will end.But in what condition one should only see how it is left.So is our workers or officials.Instead I would suggest ,just get out of your fourwalls and comfort chair and give a visit or surprise visit .And make sure how they work or work really? That might bring more.

By giving a deadline for completion may lead to compromise in quality and process. Instead the monetary penalties and disqualifying the contractors from bidding into future government projects can produce some action. At the same time government officials who are responsible also need to be given the deadlines to get the required clearance in timely permission and release of funds, which also causes delay in many projects.

If someone is new in post in our Indian Government and their public works and schedules, one would consider the Udupi DC's desired deadline to be absurd, Time will tell. Take for example the traffic light infrastructures laying on the road in the former Diana Restaurant besides the Canara Bank, why does the DC or her staff not observe this or the traffic lights infrastructure already in place since four years at the Kalsanka cross road. What about road repairs and maintenance. The PWD of Udupi is not observing the damaged roads all over Udupi. What is their problem? The Municipality of Udupi does not do anything to arrest all illegal vendors who block pavements and roads much to the inconvenience of the public. The Health Department too is sleeping allowing so many illegal roadside eateries.

Very good move. Deadlines should be set for all these kind of projects and contractors should be fined on a day basis (Contractor to pay some amount for every day extended) if work is not completed before the deadline.

Impossible... They are only assembling the mammoth structure just beside the intended placement location... The placement location is not prepared yet to receive the super structure... After laying in place motorway has to be prepared, subjected to load test... And madam is talking Jan 10th... Please don't hurry critical civil installations unless you want to see a tragedy again...
