Washington, Dec 18: United States President-elect Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to India, signalling a possible increase in tariffs on Indian imports. Just days away from assuming office, Trump’s remarks indicate his dissatisfaction with the trade balance between the two nations and suggest a shift in India-US trade relations.
In a recent press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump criticized India for imposing high tariffs on American products. Expressing his frustration, he stated, “India charges us 100% and even 200% tariffs on some US goods, but we impose no tariffs on them. If they want to levy high duties, so will we.” He emphasized the principle of reciprocity, warning that the US under his administration would respond to India's policies in a tit-for-tat manner.
Trump has voiced similar concerns in the past but has adopted a sharper tone this time. Citing examples of unfair practices, he included both India and Brazil as countries imposing steep tariffs on American goods.
The President-elect’s comments have reignited discussions on the potential impact of his policies on India-US relations. Trump’s earlier tenure witnessed a strengthening of ties between the two countries, with mutual admiration exchanged between him and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Notably, Trump referred to Modi as a ‘tough negotiator’ during an interview in his first term.
However, the tone of the discourse appears to have shifted. Trump emphasized that countries imposing significant tariffs on US products should be prepared for a reciprocal response. "If they impose high duties, we will do the same. They tax us heavily on almost everything, but we don’t. This has to change," he asserted.
