Udupi, Dec 14: The much-anticipated Ambalpady Circle overpass project is set to commence on December 16, according to the project engineer.

The delay in starting the work was attributed to traffic diversion issues, but the project is now expected to be completed by May 2026, with no further delays anticipated.

MLA Yashpal Suvarna expressed confidence in the timely completion of the project, stating, “This project will begin on December 16 without any further delays. The authorities have received valuable advice on design and execution. I am committed to ensuring its completion on time because the people will hold me accountable for any setbacks. The improvements in Malpe, Parkala, and Santhekatte stand as beautiful examples of progress, and I personally inspect these works regularly. We are planning for the next 100 years with this overpass. It will make travel faster and safer. The 15x15-meter overpass will be a success, and we are also working to resolve the water accumulation issues at Karavali.”

The 15x15-meter overpass aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance infrastructure in the region. It will also include well-designed drainage systems and pedestrian facilities. Local authorities have assured the public that the overpass will be built to the highest standards, with no compromises on quality.

During the discussion, local residents raised concerns about the overpass’s design and durability. Some questioned whether the size and structure of the overpass were sufficient, with suggestions for a pillar-based structure to improve stability. There were also inquiries about road diversions and pedestrian facilities.

A major point of discussion was the project’s prolonged delay, which locals believe was caused by political factors, leading to accidents and inconvenience in the area for the past eight years. Residents strongly urged that the project adhere to the new timeline, with work scheduled to begin on December 16.

The engineer overseeing the project reassured the public that no further delays would be caused by government restrictions. He also confirmed that the project would be executed with the utmost focus on quality, aiming to address the pressing issues of traffic congestion and frequent accidents in the area.

The discussion saw the participation of MLA Yashpal Suvarna, Engineer Sahul from Karla Constructions, local authorities, shop owners, and other stakeholders.

respected sir, it is natural of coastal topography & weather system to empty rain water into the sea, now by not going in for pillar based flyover to save money will be creating another artificial barrier for rain water to empty westwards as well as create clogging issues of sewage system adding to that rule of not being able to undertake digging of NH by local admin. Wheras in pillar based design there can always be flexibility & free flow of traffic, rain water as well as sewage system, we would be deliberately axing our own feet by closing the option of flexibility. already most rivulets canals accross the highway have turned into carriers of sewage & poisonous water thereby affecting wells, the clogging of sewage water near manipal inn karavali bypass & unbearable stench is well known to all. Not being able to convince cental agencies & minister to take up pillar based design is our failure

Thanks to the MLA for taking personal interest in completion of these projects. I would also ask to have either an overpass or an under pass at Katapadi junction which is a major junction while also making sure good quality service road is built on both sides of NH-66 all the way from Katapadi till Santekatte even though service roads (this is important as Udupi city is a fast growing city) are needed throughout NH-66 from Mangaluru till Kundapura.
