Mangaluru, Dec 8: A mother and her three children sustained serious injuries when a gas cylinder exploded at their home in Kandika, under the Manjanady village limits. All four are currently admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Deralakatte.

According to reports, the family was sleeping in the house of Mutalib, a resident of Kandika, when a loud explosion occurred at midnight. The blast shattered the roof of the house and caused extensive damage to the windows and bedroom. The cot on which the mother and children were sleeping was completely burned.

The elder daughter, who was sleeping alongside her mother, managed to open the door and move her siblings and mother, all of whom had sustained severe burn injuries, to the hospital. Tahsildar Puttaraji later visited the scene.

The injured have been identified as Khubra and her children Meyadiaya, Maziya, and Mayida. A local resident who heard the explosion raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to rush to the site and extinguish the fire.

It is suspected that a gas leak from the cylinder caused the explosion, leading to the devastating fire.

Intriguing; even if the gas was leaking; as the explosions took place in the night, there should have been some trigger/spark, even operating an electric switch is enough to cause an explanation; moreover, the cylinder shown in the picture doesn't show any signs of puncture or dents to term it as cylinder blast? In all probability large amount of gas leaked and accumulated in the I'll ventilated kitchen and some sort of electrical spark might have triggered the explosion of the accumulated gas in the enclosure!

Always there should be some ventilation in the kitchen if doors and windows are closed during night.

True. If there is proper ventilation, blast may not have occurred. Also if there is a smell of lpg one should not start a electrical switch or anything that produces a spark. Both the knob at the cylinder level and on the hotplate should be switched off after cooking.

sad incident but quite common and expected in third world countries.. in developed countries the gas cylinder is always kept outside the kitchen so that even if the explosion happens the wall between balcony and kitchen will minimize the damage...but alas...no one will care or listen in highly corrupt counties...some cylinders are so bad in shape that even gujri people will not take them...
