Puttur: The Jewels group conducts free cancer awareness, screening camp

Puttur, Dec 3: The Jewels group, in collaboration with the Catholic board of Education, Mangalore diocese, Puttur Church health commission, Father Muller Medical College Hospital Mangaluru, and the Indian Cancer society, organized a free cancer awareness and screening camp on December 1 at Mae De Deus Church Hall. The camp benefited 232 individuals, with 112 Pap smears, 160 breast examinations for women, and 65 mouth and throat examinations for men conducted.

Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangalore, honored the event with his presence. He expressed his admiration for the Jewels Group's initiatives, commending their dedication to social work. Recognizing cancer as a severe illness, he emphasized the responsibility of aware citizens to seek warnings and information about it. He also wished the programme great success.

Dr Rohan Gatti, Dr Dinesh Shet, and Dr Elroy Saldana, expert cancer specialists from Father Muller Medical College Hospital, attended and provided insights on cancer awareness, particularly women's health. Gracie D'Souza, a member of Jewels Group, emphasized the importance of understanding cancer to prevent it through awareness. Jewels group has organized 14 such camps with the mission to inspire society, assist cancer patients, spread information, and create a cancer-free community.

Tina Fernandes, a member of the Jewels group, expressed her appreciation to Fr Praveen Leo Lasrado, secretary of the Catholic education board, and Fr Lawrence Mascarenes, parish priest of Mae De Deus Church, for their support in promoting the camp. Oliveira Quadros hosted the event.
