Udupi, Dec 2: The ‘Lombard Hospital Udupi Marathon – 2024’, organized by the Udupi Runners Club in association with Lombard Memorial Hospital, was held at Sea Walk, Malpe, on December 1.
The marathon was flagged off by distinguished guests.
The event celebrated the first anniversary of the Udupi Runners Club and the 101st anniversary of Lombard Memorial Hospital, the title sponsor of the marathon. It featured multiple categories, including a 3 km fun run, and 3 km, 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km runs. Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna inaugurated the 21 km run.
Yashpal Suvarna, MLA of Udupi, emphasized the importance of fitness and health, stating, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, initiatives like Swachh Bharat are not only fostering a clean and green India but also promoting overall well-being and a healthy environment. Alongside cleanliness, we must prioritize health, as good health is essential for achieving one’s goals. The Udupi Runners Club, with over 150 members, is playing a vital role in guiding youth away from distractions like social media and raising awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. This marathon is about more than winning; it’s about participation, building a better society, and spreading vital information. I encourage the people of Udupi to dedicate at least two hours daily to exercise.”
Dr Sushil Jathanna, director of Lombard Memorial Hospital, stated, “This is the first Udupi Marathon, organized by the Udupi Runners Club, with Lombard Hospital offering coordination support. The primary goal of this event is to raise awareness about the importance of regular exercise, especially as heart disease cases are rising in India. To prevent such conditions, maintaining a healthy diet and exercising for at least 30 minutes daily is crucial. Another objective is to highlight Udupi on state and national platforms and promote tourism in the region. This marathon should become an annual event in Udupi’s December calendar.”
The event began with warm-up activities, including exercise routines and Zumba sessions, energizing participants for the run. A formal prize distribution ceremony followed the marathon.
The marathon was sponsored by Lombard Hospital, along with Cochin Shipyard, Grassland Developers Udupi, Bhima Gold Udupi, Adani Groups, and Harsha. Several philanthropists also extended financial support for the event.
The event was attended by dignitaries such as businessmen Sadu Salian and Ananda P Suvarna; president of Udupi Runners Club Dr Tilak Chandra Pal; Cochin Udupi Shipyard officer Harikumar A; assistant director of the department of youth empowerment and sports Dr Roshan Kumar Shetty; cluster head of Bhima Jewellers Karthik Raj; deputy general manager M Ambalavanan; Dr Guru Prasad; and president of Adani Groups Kishore Alva, among others.
