Karkala, Oct 26: In a tragic accident early on Saturday October 26, a 21-year-old man was fatally struck by a speeding goods vehicle while standing by the roadside near the Otehalla bridge close to Guddeyangadi, Ajekar.

The deceased has been identified as Asai Thambi (21).

The goods vehicle, belonging to a courier company, was traveling at high speed from Karkala towards Hebri when it veered to the right side of the road and collided with Asai, overturning after impact. It is suspected that the driver, en route to Hanagal in Hubballi, may have dozed off at the wheel.

Staff nurse Devika and driver Kishore Kumar from the Ajekar primary health centre’s 108 emergency team provided immediate first aid, but despite rushing him to the Karkala Government Hospital, Asai succumbed to his injuries on the way.

A case has been registered at the Ajekar police station, and an investigation is underway.
