'BJP cannot win by-election with overconfidence', says minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar

Udupi, Oct 19: "BJP cannot win this election with its overconfidence. No one can predict the results or the mood of the voters. Congress has worked hard to strengthen the gram panchayat, and we are confident of winning," stated Lakshmi Hebbalkar, Udupi district in-charge minister and Minister for Women and Child Development, during a media briefing on Saturday, October 19.

As the final phase of the Dakshina Kannada local body by-election approaches, Hebbalkar expressed strong support for Congress candidate Raju Poojary. "We have made all necessary preparations for our candidate's success. BJP's overconfidence will lead to their downfall. They may assume victory is guaranteed, but overconfidence is not the same as winning," she remarked.

Hebbalkar emphasised Congress's commitment to the Panchayati Raj system, citing initiatives like the Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA) as hallmarks of their governance. "We are confident in our chances. Congress has always driven the vision for the Panchayat," she added.

On the Kasturirangan report, Hebbalkar noted that while extensive discussions had occurred, no promises could be made due to the election code of conduct. Decisions will be taken in consultation with the Forest Minister.

Responding to Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje's allegations regarding destroyed MUDA files, Hebbalkar said, "As a woman, I respect Shobha, but she often incites rather than calms situations. The ED raids are politically motivated."

Discussing the Panchamasali Lingayat 2A reservation, Hebbalkar mentioned positive talks with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar but withheld details due to the election code of conduct.

Addressing BJP's claims of neglect in funding Coastal Karnataka, she countered, "Why is the BJP silent on injustices from the Centre? Their MPs should focus on real work instead of misleading people." Hebbalkar called for responsible political discourse.

The event was attended by MLC Ivan D'Souza, district Congress president Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, former MP Jayaprakash Hegde, MLC Congress nominee Raju Poojary, and other leaders.

She has a point. Congress set out to win Haryana purely by overconfidence (Congress spokesperson was betting on not more than 15 seats for BJP in Haryana before elections) and ended up blaming the EVMs. If BJP indeed is banking heavily on overconfidence, listen to Congress. They are fresh out after learning this lesson firsthand.
