Mangaluru, Oct 11: Mangaluru has long been a pioneer in city route bus services, efficiently and smoothly operated by private owners dedicated to serving the citizens. A prime example is St Antony Motors, which has been a key player in the field for the past 50 years. Founded in 1974 by Romeo Saldanha with just one bus, the company gradually expanded its services, adding more buses on city routes over the years to meet the growing demands of the city. Through hard work and dedication, Romeo Saldanha successfully built and managed the business. Even today, he actively oversees operations, ensuring that his passengers have a hassle-free ride, while also encouraging his employees to work hard and improve their lives. St Antony Motors has always prioritized the safety of its passengers, which is why even today, people happily prefer to travel in its buses. The firm currently has 13 buses in its fleet. Romeo Saldanha is supported by his wife, Mabel, and their son, Roshan Saldanha, both of whom also actively participate in the day-to-day operations of the firm.
To mark the successful completion of 50 years, a thanksgiving Mass was offered by Romeo Saldanha at 6:30 am at St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia, followed by the blessing of the buses.
Fr Bonaventure Nazareth, parish priest of Milagres Church, who spoke a few words about Romeo Saldanha, appreciated his dedication and commitment to his venture. He praised Romeo as a great mentor to those around him and acknowledged his efforts in helping the needy.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Mithun M Rai appreciated Romeo Saldanha for his contributions to the field of transport, highlighting his simplicity as an example for many in the industry. He expressed his wish that the firm adds more buses to its fleet and congratulated the team of St Antony Motors.
Mangaluru City Corporation opposition leader and Kankanady ward corporator Praveen Chandra Alva hailed Romeo and Roshan Saldanha as perfect examples in the transport field. He recalled his college days when Romeo Saldanha supported them in their leadership endeavors. He wished them good luck and praised their dedication.
As a mark of love, respect, and gratitude, the employees of St Antony Motors presented their boss with a cake to cut and a large collage as a token of appreciation. A procession was held with their boss in an open jeep, accompanied by all their buses.
Mr World 1990 fame Raymond D’Souza and State Bank - Talapady City Bus Association president Ashwatham Hegde were the guests of honor.
Parish priest of Valencia Church, Fr Roque D’Sa, blessed the buses. Valencia Parish Council vice-president Ronald Rodrigues compered the program. Romeo Saldanha proposed the vote of thanks. As the firm celebrated 50 years of service, all attendees were provided with a hearty breakfast.
