I can't begin to express my anguish over the increasing littering in Mangalore, often deliberately by individuals who seem indifferent to the welfare of our civic society. Adding to the problem are the open garbage vans, from which litter frequently flies off, scattering across the roads as they move. I know many fellow concerned citizens share this frustration. This unfortunate situation wasn’t always the case, especially when the Swachh Bharat campaign was in full swing. The regular cleanliness drives, particularly those organized by the Ramakrishna Mission, instilled a sense of responsibility, even making people feel guilty about littering. To address this growing problem, we must consider innovative solutions, such as installing dustbins on light poles at regular intervals. This simple measure would provide a convenient place for people to dispose of their waste rather than carelessly dropping it on the ground. Of course, this would need to be combined with the garbage collectors working at least two shifts a day to ensure regular upkeep. It’s important to remember that Swachh Bharat isn’t a one-time event—it’s a lifelong commitment to maintaining cleanliness in our nation. I wish Mr. Patla Sathish Shetty and Mr. Walter Nandalike all the best in their roles as ambassadors of Swachh Mangaluru. I hope their efforts inspire everyone to make a lasting pledge to keep our beautiful city, Namma Kudla, as pristine as she truly deserves to be.
