Panaji, Nov 15: It is unlikely that state or central government would ban the exports of iron ore even if Justice M B Shah Commission recommends for the same, a senior congress functionary said on Tuesday November 15.
Goa Congress spokesman Mauvin Godinho said that Justice Shah Commission is ultimately a recommendatory authority.
Godinho said that he doesn’t think any government, whether in state or centre, will even think of banning iron ore exports. He was addressing the media at Congress House here.
Godinho said that after Shah Commission’s report, state and central government will adopt practical approach without affecting the economy of the state.
Shah Commission is in its final stages of enquiry into illegal iron ore trade from Goa. The speculations were rife that the commission might recommend for the total ban of export paralyzing the economy of the state.
Godinho said that the Congress party stands by its policy that legal mining should survive and illegal should be weeded out.
“Fly-by-night operators will fly by night but it should not affect the legal mining and people who are dependent on it should survive,” he commented.
The state is the largest exporter of iron ore in the country. Total 54 million metric tons of ore was exported from Goa last fiscal, mostly to the international markets like China, Japan and Australia.
