Mangaluru, Jul 30: MP Capt Brijesh Chowta has written to the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, requesting permission to address a matter of urgent public importance under Rule 377 in the House on Monday, July 29.
In his letter, Capt Chowta highlighted the alarming surge in drug abuse among youths in the district. He noted that news headlines frequently report the rampant movement of drugs in the city, which, as a hub of various educational institutions, has become a high-risk area for drug trafficking due to its large student population.
He added, "Last year, there were instances where even students from medical colleges were accused of drug-related activities. Despite police crackdowns leading to arrests, the supply and movement of drugs persist, with reports indicating that even young school children are becoming involved. The high disposable income of young minds has made them vulnerable targets. Additionally, there have been reports of female students in Dakshina Kannada (DK) being used as drug peddlers. On average, 60 individuals per month visit drug de-addiction centers in Mangaluru city. This is a grave concern that requires immediate action to dismantle the sources of this menace, as it also poses a national security threat, with handlers using drug trade profits to fund terrorist activities."
