Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, May 21: In a tragic collision between an Innova car and a container truck early Tuesday morning on Shiradi Ghat, a mother and son died while others sustained serious injuries.

The deceased are identified as Mohammed Shafiq (20), son of Shabbir, a resident of Panemangaluru Bondala, and Shabbir’s wife Safiya (50).

The accident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Sakleshpur rural police station. The car was approaching Kempuhole on Shiradi Ghat when the container truck, coming from the opposite direction, collided with it.

It is reported that among the passengers in the car, three children were seriously injured. The family was returning after attending a relative's reception function in Bengaluru.

A family member of the deceased stated, “There was a wedding reception in Bengaluru on May 20. The family, traveling in the car, also attended the event. They left Bengaluru around midnight to return to Mangaluru. The accident occurred when a truck collided with the car.”

Shafiq was driving the car. He was reportedly studying at the P A Engineering College in Konaje. The mortal remains of both mother and son were shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru, while the other injured individuals are being treated at another hospital in the city.

The way our RTO issues driving licences, it is clear evidence that they are issuing licences to kill rather than to drive. More than 90% of drivers have no knowledge of traffic rules and irresponsible, reckless road behaviour is the root cause of these accidents and untimely deaths. Our toothless laws and spineless corrupt governance systems are to be squarely responsible . We are a over populated Country and don't value human life, government gives a damn to the deaths on roads. All they are interested is in collecting taxes.

Youths driving recklessly is no doubt. And if it’s Innova then they will think that they are totally safe. Innova drivers keep in mind that there are big vehicles than yours.

Sir, I think you have never driven in the shiradi ghat charmadi, if you have done you must have seen how those fish n chicken trucks drive recklessly on the wrong side of the road even on hair pin curves and if you drive at night you may note how those drunk volvo bus drivers overtake vehicles on the single lane with high beam headlights, there are so many blind curves in both ghats you never know which imbecile driver will appear right in front of your vehicle unexpectedly, even though who careful n vigilant you are

RIP departed souls!! Newly broadened roads have become harbingers of death due to unscientific constant and zilch adherence to safety standards (extremely risky for unprofessional drivers in the night) construction mostly done by small time TDH contractors...horrible state of affairs...no doubt it has become the worst place for RTA casualties!

I am a frequent driver in Shiradi Ghat and Charmadi Ghat. As per my observation many accidents occur due to overtaking in curves/bends where there is no visibility on opposite direction. I have seen people overtaking blindly and recklessly. We should not overtake unless 200 meters road infront of us is clearly seen.
